Broughham castle

Before Callum and Patrick leave England and return to Scotland, they wanted to stop at another English castle.

Brougham Castle was built in the early thirteenth century by Robert de Vieuxpont who was an ally of King John. Like the Roman Fort that had previously occupied the site, it was intended to secure a strategically important route through the Pennines. The castle later passed to the Clifford family who substantially upgraded the structure.

As they started to explore Broughham, they noticed a dinosaur they had never met before! Could this be a new friend?

"Hi!" Patrick and Callum wave.

"Would you come out and play with us?"

The new dinosaur introduced herself, "My name is Tedrina Elizabeth Catherine Brougham, you can call me Ted."

"Wow, says Patrick, I am glad I don't have to learn how to spell that!"

Ted took Callum and Patrick all around the castle.

Broughham castle is really super old, Ted told Callum.

Did you know that in the tenth century AD, Brougham formed part of the Kingdom of Cumbria. In AD 945 this domain was conquered by Malcolm I of Scotland and it remained in Scottish hands until 1092 when William II occupied the territory.

So, really you two aren't that far from home! This was once Scottish territory!

Callum and Patrick thought was was incredible!

All around the castle the dinosaurs played the game of being castle guards pretending to guard Broughham.

Broughham saw many many battles and it must have had many so guards over its life time.

Perhaps, this was once a bedroom?

Or maybe, a room for music, added Ted.

I wonder what the music sounded like back in AD 900s?

Every where around the castle was quiet and the dinosaurs found lots and lots of caterpillars.

Broughham must have lots of butterflies in the summer time.

Callum and Patrick thanked Ted for playing with them and hope to see her again soon.
